The Meg - A Massive Creature

Jason Statham (“Spy,” “The Fate of the Furious,” “The Expendables” films) and award-winning Chinese actress Li Bingbing (“Transformers: Age of Extinction,” “Forbidden Kingdom,” “The Message”) star in the science fiction action thriller “The Meg,” directed by Jon Turteltaub (the “National Treasure” movies).

A deep-sea submersible — part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest part of the Pacific Ocean … with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, former deep-sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is drawn out of self-imposed exile by a visionary Chinese oceanographer, Dr. Zhang (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter, Suyin (Li Bingbing), who thinks she can rescue the crew on her own.

The Megalodon is here

But it will take their combined efforts to save the crew, and the ocean itself, from this seemingly unstoppable threat — a prehistoric 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. Thought to be extinct, the Meg turns out to be very much alive…and on the hunt.

Five years before, Jonas had encountered this same terrifying creature, but no one had believed him. Now, teamed with Suyin, Jonas must confront his fears and risk his own life to return to the ocean depths…bringing him face to face once more with the apex predator of all time.

The main cast of “The Meg” also includes Rainn Wilson (TV’s “The Office”), Ruby Rose (“John Wick: Chapter 2,” TV’s “Orange is the New Black”), Winston Chao (“Skiptrace,” “Kabali”), Page Kennedy (TV’s “Rush Hour”), Jessica McNamee (“Battle of the Sexes,” TV’s “Sirens”), Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (“The BFG,” upcoming “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald”), Robert Taylor (“Kong: Skull Island,” TV’s “Longmire”), Sophia Cai (“Somewhere Only We Know”), Masi Oka (TV’s “Hawaii Five-0,” “Heroes”) and Cliff Curtis (“The Dark Horse,” TV’s “Fear the Walking Dead”).

Still no 'Best Casting By' award at the Academy Awards

Why don't casting directors have a category for "Best Casting By" at the Academy Awards?

To comprehend this issue, you have to have a deep understanding of how the casting process works.

Casting directors are contracted by production companies and/or studios to cast specific projects. The casting directors (and their associate casting directors and assistants) filter through massive amounts of submissions for specific roles, mainly through talent agents.

The casting directors then audition actors for the specific roles being cast. They then choose what actors that they personally deem "right for the role", at their discretion, and they subsequently advance those actors to a "call back", to audition for the director, writer(s), producers, and for major roles.. the studio executives.

Eventually, the right actor for the role is hired. The actor is not hired directly by the casting director, but rather the director/production company/studio.

Other than for small speaking roles on TV series, the casting director does not have the ability to hire actors, they simply select a certain group of actors to advance in the casting process. I am not talking about extras. Extras are cast directly by Extras Casting Directors/Companies.

For there to be an Academy Award category for principal actor casting directors, the voting members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences would have to be able to see all of the hundreds (and even thousands) of actor's auditions for each role by the "Best Casting By" nominee, to be able to judge whether or not each casting director nominee did the best job.

And just to narrow down the casting nominees, there would have to be a massive amount of that material available to the Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences nominating committee. That is a logistical impossibility.

Directors, producers, writers, and studio executives have the final say in who is cast in specific roles, not casting directors. The best casting directors do a great job, and they have a great collaboration with those who do hire the actors, however there is no definitive way to establish a criteria for an Academy Award category for "Best Casting By".

I can elaborate much more about the casting process, however that would require much more than I can post here, it would be a complete eBook. I do want to elaborate about why casting directors are never credited in films as a Casting "Director", but rather credited as "Casting By".

The Directors Guild of America does not allow, by contract, any other persons on a film being credited with the word "Director", unless they are actually a "director" i.e. 1st AD (First Assistant Director, etc). That includes the Cinematographer (widely called "DP" or "Director of Photography" on the set).

Casting directors are some of the hardest working people in the entertainment industry, but there you go, that is why there is no Oscar Award category for "Best Casting By".

'Independence Day 2' casting actors and extras

The feature film Independence Day 2 is now officially in pre-production, and the casting calls and auditions information is now available.

Electric Entertainment and Centropolis Entertainment is set to begin filming on Independence Day 2 on May 1, 2015 in New Mexico. Auditions are taking place in both Los Angeles and Albuquerque for starring and supporting roles. The film's extras and stand-ins will be cast in New Mexico. Crew members can submit resumes by email. All submission information for actors and crew members is posted below. Extras registration is also posted below.

Independence Day Forever takes place twenty years after USAF Captain Steven Hiller and satellite technician David Levinson flew a repaired alien attacker vessel into the mothership and introduced a computer virus, planted a nuclear missile on board, and ultimately allowed for the defeat of the alien invaders. But before the aliens were completely destroyed, they were able to send out a distress call that took 20 years to travel across the vast distance of space to the alien planet. Now, once again traveling through wormholes, the extraterrestrial invaders are back to launch a new second wave of attacks. Although earthlings have spent the last 20 years since the botched invasion using the alien tech for our own advancement, the extraterrestrial invaders are still far more advanced and much better prepared this time around.

Starring in Independence Day Forever is Jessie Usher playing the role of Captain Steven Hiller's step son Dylan Dubrow, who was a small boy in the first film (played by Ross Bagley, who was nominated for a Young Artist Award for the role). Jessie Usher is best known for his role as Cam Calloway on the Starz! television series Survivor's Remorse. Also starring in Independence Day Forever is People's Choice Awards winner Liam Hemsworth. The studio does not wish to release any details of his character at this time. The only other actors cast are Academy Award nominee Jeff Goldblum and Saturn Award nominee Bill Pullman, reprising their roles as David Levinson and Thomas Whitmore (obviously no longer president) respectively.

Saturn Award winner Roland Emmerich will direct Independence Day Forever from an original screenplay written by Carter Blanchard. Electric Entertainment President Dean Devlin will produce along with BMI Film & TV Awards winner Harald Kloser and Roland Emmerich. Roland Emmerich's sister Ute Emmerich will executive produce under the banner of their production company Centropolis Entertainment. Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation will handle theatrical distribution, while DreamWorks Distribution will handle all media. Independence Day Forever is scheduled to be released in theaters on Jun 24, 2016. The original Independence Day film grossed over $817 million at the box office worldwide.

Casting call for indie feature film 'Never Goin Back'

Casting Principals for NEVER GOIN BACK

  • Project Type: Feature Film - Independent (Paid)
  • Company: Hungry Bear Productions
  • Location: Dallas area
  • Shooting Schedule: September 18 - October 5, 2014 16 days; 6 days/week
  • Send resumes to: film@buffalocasting.com
CASTING SEARCH – INDEPENDENT FEATURE FILM – NEVER GOIN BACK

SYNOPSIS – 16 year old BFF’s Jessie and Angela are high school dropouts who just lost their jobs at the local pancake house. In an attempt to get rent money and avoid eviction, they embark on a day of adventure that includes dudes, drugs, booze and an ill advised heist. Just another day in the life of your average 16 year old girl.

Director – Augustine Frizzell
Production – Hungry Bear Productions
Casting Directors – Tisha Blood + Matthew Taylor – Buffalo Casting
Interview Date – Saturday July 26, 2014
Callback Date – Saturday August 2, 2014
Shoot Start Date – September 18- October 5, 2014. 16 day shoot, 6 day weeks. Talent will not work all days, however the leads need to have a pretty clear schedule during this time frame.
Rate – Leads – $100 + 15% agency fee (if applicable), per day.
Status – Non-Union Feature Film
Location – Dallas Area Locations. All talent for local hire.
The actors will be paid a stipend and be given food and credit. The Filmmakers are hoping for a festival premiere/tour and are planning to submit to Sundance & SXSW.
Ideally, all actors will be 18 or over but look/play younger, be legal 18 or be home schooled due to the shooting schedule.

CONTENT – Adult content/situations. No Nudity. Implied Drug Use. Implied Sexual Situations. Strong language. The two leads are 16 year old girls who get into a decent amount of trouble. They do drugs and smoke and there’s a make out scene that implies sex. Note on the content from the director – At the moment, the script contains only boy/girl kissing but I’m in the middle of rewrites and girl/girl kissing may be reintroduced if it’s appropriate. (it was in an earlier draft.)  In all my projects, it’s my goal to include as many demographics as possible regarding race/sex/background and sexual orientation. I feel that these areas are vastly underrepresented in film and I hope, when my story allows, to include them.   If included, it would be in a way that’s honest and emotionally relevant to the characters and story, never gratuitous.

OVERALL – We are not looking for squeaky clean actors – looking for real looking kids that could be from Garland Texas. Acting experience is not required.

JESSE – Lead role
16 yrs old – Caucasian female.
Rough around the edges, maybe even a little grungy. Level headed, balances out the flightiness of her best friend Angela but is still a smart ass. Wants to be responsible but has a hard time making the best decisions. Loves smoking pot, video games and guys.

ANGELA – Lead role
16 yrs old – Caucasian female.
Natural and unglamorous but enjoys looking cute and wearing a little makeup. A big thinker and dreamer with ideas that aren’t always well thought out. Charismatic and very enthusiastic. Loves guys, drugs and being the center of attention.

DUSTIN – Lead role
18-21 yrs old – Caucasian male.
Ex-athlete. Tall, handsome, clean and charismatic. A trouble maker with kind heart, he’s not the brightest guy around but he’s sweet. Jesse’s older brother. Tries to be a thug but he’s not fooling anyone.

RYAN – Lead role
18-21 yrs old – Any ethnicity.
Dustin’s best friend. A little preppy, comes from money but has strict parents whom he rebels against by hanging with wannabe thugs and dealing drugs. A little bratty but also wants to fit in.

BRANDON – Lead role
18-30 yrs old – Caucasian or Hispanic Male.
Overweight, sloppy and unkept. He’s funny and lewd. A Jonah Hill type. Comedic/Character.

Independent film 'Windsor' casting calls for actors, extras, and crew members

casting calls for actors

Windsor Operating LLC and Turnpike Pictures will begin shooting the indie feature film Windsor on July 28, 2014 in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Casting directors in Los Angeles and Dallas are accepting photos and resumes from actors to be considered for various speaking roles. People interested in working as fully paid extras and stand-ins can submit to the extras casting directors in Texas. In addition, experienced film crew members can email their info for consideration. Shooting will run through August 23, 2014. All actors, extras and crew members must be legally eligible to work in Texas and in the United States.

Windsor centers on six best friends, who in their last year of high school, prepare to leave their small, struggling hometown of Windsor, a place caught in the slow, fine-grinding wheels of American big business that seem to have no side doors for small town America. One of the six, Maisie, whose father is about to be released from prison, decides she can't leave the town where she has been embraced so lovingly since the dark day that her father nearly killed the man whose company foreclosed on their family farm. The town's patriarch, Gil Denton, a no nonsense, wealthy landowner dying from cancer, loves these six kids, and in his remaining time with them he serves as a sounding board, dependable guide, and sympathetic friend - while providing them a wistful link to a past they will never know.

Starring in Windsor is three-time Primetime Emmy Award nominee Barry Corbin playing the town patriarch Gil Denton, Screen Actors Guild Awards nominee Stelio Savante plays the role of Perry Gandy, Joe Stevens plays Kline Coley, Mark Adam Goff plays Hank Kinsey, and Peyton Clark plays Itchy. Porter Farrell will direct from his own original screenplay. Producers are Porter Farrell, John J Kelly, Allison Graham, and Adam Dietrich.

'Taken 3' casting calls for actors and extras in Los Angeles and Atlanta

Taken 3 casting calls

Production is now underway on the action thriller feature film Taken 2, and casting calls are now taking place for both principal actors and extras.

Major Europe and French production company Europacorp Films has begun production on the third installment of the Taken film franchise. Shooting will start in Los Angeles, and will move to Atlanta in late April. The two-time Primetime Emmy Award winning casting director in Los Angeles has sent out casting calls and is holding auditions for actors to fill co-starring and supporting roles. The extras will be cast in Atlanta beginning on April 24th, and registration is now taking place. Experienced film crew members in Atlanta can email resumes to the production company. Additional filming will take place in Paris and Spain. Shooting will run through July 9, 2014.

Starring in Taken 3 is Academy Award nominee Liam Neeson reprising his role as former CIA operative Bryan Mills. The Taken films have changed Neeson's image, and he is now a bonafide action film star. He recently starred opposite Amanda Seyfried and Charlize Theron in Universal Pictures' A Million Ways to Die in the West. Other recent films include A Walk Among the Tombstones and the Warner Bros. film Run All Night. Screen Actors Guild Awards winner Maggie Grace also returns as Neeson's daughter Kim, and Famke Janssen plays his ex-wife Lenore. Three-time Teen Choice Awards nominee Jon Gries will again play the role of Casey, while Leland Orser is back playing Neeson's best friend Sam. I have also confirmed that Academy Award winner Forest Whitaker has signed on to return as Inspector Dotzler. Casting calls did indeed go out to all talent agents in Los Angeles for the role of Neeson's daughter Kim, and for Inspector Dotzler, however Maggie Grace and Forest Whitaker successfully negotiated contracts shorty after to return in those roles.

European Film Awards nominee Olivier Megaton returns to direct Taken 3 from an original screenplay written by BAFTA Film Awards nominee Luc Besson and Hugo Awards nominee Robert Mark Kamen. Megaton directed Taken 2, which was made for $45 million and raked in over $140 million at the box office. Luc Besson is producing Taken 3 along with EuropaCorp Films CEO Christophe Lambert. Taken 3 will hit theaters on January 9, 2015.

Adults and children casting call for 'Boychoir' starring Dustin Hoffman and Kathy Bates

The futuristic action sci-fi film Boychoir is nearing the start of filming, and casting calls for extras and crew calls for experienced production staff and film crew members are underway.

Informant Media and Carol Baum Productions in association with Goldenring Productions and Embankment Film will begin shooting Boychoir on February 24th in the Stamford and Greenwich, CT areas. Connecticut production will run through March 28th, then will move to New York. The film stars Academy Award winners Dustin Hoffman, Kathy Bates, and Sissy Spacek.

Boychoir tells the story of 10 year old small town hellion Stet Cates, who seems bound for a life of trouble and delinquency - except for the fact that he has an angelic singing voice that comes along once in a generation. When Stet's single mother Debbie is killed in a car wreck, his biological father Gerard, whom he has never met, is ready to relegate him to the foster care system without a thought - until Stet's middle school principal Ms. Steele urges Gerard to place Stet in Mr. Carvelle's boys' choir, (fashioned after the actual American Boychoir School) - the top in the country. But whether the renegade Stet can conform to Carvelle, Drake’s And The Headmaster’s rigid discipline and do honor to his innate talent is a very open question, especially when Devon, the top singer in the choir, decides to sabotage his rival in any way he can... Wooly is the one ally at the school who knows the real reason Stet should stay at the school – it's not about the music, it's about becoming a little man, who can face any challenge or foe.

Grammy Award winner Francois Girard is directing Boychoir from an original screenplay written by Ben Ripley. Primetime Emmy Award winner Judy Cairo will produce for Informant Media, Carol Baum will produce for her company Carol Baum Productions, and Jane Goldenring produces for Goldenring productions. Executive producers are Informant Media's Michael A. Simpson and Eric Brenner, Darrel Casalino, and Jarod Becker.

Casting notice for indie feature film 'Car Dogs' adult, teen, and child actors and extras

Car Dogs Casting Calls Arizona

"Car Dogs" will film in Phoenix, AZ beginning on November 8, 2013.
AB Media Publishing, LLC

Production is now set to begin on the indie feature film "Car Dogs" beginning on November 8, 2013. The award winning casting director is auditioning actors for co-starring, supporting, and day-player roles. The extras casting department is also now taking submissions from people of all ages including children and seniors, to appear in the film as fully paid general extras and featured background actors. Shooting is taking place in the Phoenix, Arizona area and will run through December 4, 2013.

"Car Dogs" takes a rare look at the funny and intensely dramatic world that is the car business. The drama in "Car Dogs" centers on a powerful father-son battle between the owner of a car dealership, John Chamberlain, and his son, Mark. John is a brilliant, callous businessman who is a vicious, overbearing father. Mark is the sales manager at Chamberlain Auto, the dealership that promises to do "Whatever IT Takes" to put you in a new car. But on a scorching hot Saturday in the middle of the Phoenix summer, Mark has a chance to get his own dealership, and out from under his father's thumb. But there is a catch - Mark has to sell thirty-five cars by the end of the day. The question is, will Mark do whatever it takes, including betraying his sales team and himself to get what he wants?

Starring in "Car Dogs" is Screen Actors Guild Awards nominee Patrick J. Adams playing the role of Mark Chamberlain. Adams is a series regular on the hit USA show "Suits" playing Mike Ross. Also starring in "Car Dogs" is Academy Award winner Octavia Spencer playing the role of Sharon. Spencer recently completed shooting the feature film "Black and White" starring opposite Kevin Costner and Jennifer Ehle. Grammy Awards nominee George Lopez has joined the cast playing the role of Christian, Gotham Awards nominee Dash Mihok will play Scott, and Josh Hopkins has been cast as Mike Reynolds.

Filmmaker Adam Collis is directing "Car Dogs" from an original screenplay written by Mark Edward King, based partially on his experiences working at car dealerships in the Scottsdale, AZ area. Collis is Visiting Professor of Film Directing at Arizona State University and Founder, CEO at The Director's Perspective Acting Studio. He has received awards and nominations from the Aspen Shortsfest, Austin Film Festival, Hamptons International Film Festival, Los Angeles Independent Film Festival, New York Comedy Festival, and Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films. Collis will also produce "Car Dogs" along with Adam Robinson and F. Miguel Valenti. David Breschel will co-produce. Timothy P. Haskins is executive producer.
