Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios in association with Columbia Pictures and Strike Entertainment are in pre-production on the reboot of the 1987 Orion Pictures science fiction action film "RoboCop". Casting for the film's lead roles has been taking place in Los Angeles, and additional casting for supporting and day player roles are being cast in Toronto, Canada where filming is set to begin on September 5, 2012. All of the extras will be hired in Ontario throughout production which is scheduled to continue through January 11, 2013.

An impressive cast has been assembled for the lead roles starting with Stockholm native Joel Kinnaman in the title role of Alex Murphy/RoboCop. Australian actress Abbie Cornish has been cast to play Murphy's wife Ellen; Gary Oldman will play a new character named Norton, who is the scientist that creates Robocop; Samuel L. Jackson has joined the cast as influential television magnate Pat Novak; Marianne Jean-Baptist will play the role of Detroit Police Chief, Karen Dean; Michael Kenneth Williams is playing Murphy's partner with the Detroit Police Department; Jennifer Ehle is cast in a new role of Liz Kline; and Jackie Earle Haley will play Maddox, who gives RoboCop military training. Michael Keaton has joined the cast playing the ultra-wealthy CEO of Omnicorp.

Brazilian filmmaker José Padilha will direct "RoboCop" from a script written by Joshua Zeturner, Nick Schenk, James Vanderbilt. Padilha was known as a documentary film director until he made "The Elite Squad," his first fictional film. It instantly became a commercial and critical success, seen by more than 11 million people in Brazil. Joshua Zetumer wrote the original script for this new version of "RoboCop". He previously did rewrites on "Quantum" of Solace during filming, and his script "The Infiltrator" is set to star Leonardo DiCaprio. "Gran Torino" writer Nick Schenk was brought in to do rewrites on Zetmer's screenplay. And finally Sony hired "The Amazing Spider-Man" scribe James Vanderbilt to do final polishes on the script.

Executive producing "RoboCop" is Primetime Emmy Award nominee Bill Carraro, who recently executive produced the Universal Pictures films "Tower Heist" and "The Wolfman". Carraro was the producer of the Emmy Award winning and Golden Globe Award nominated HBO film "The Tuskegee Airmen," which earned him a Directors Guild of America DGA Award. Marc Abraham and Eric Newman of Strike Entertainment are producing "Robocop". The duo founded the company in 2002 and have produced such films as "The Rundown" starring The Rock and Sean William Scott, "Children of Men" starring Julianne Moore and Clive Owen, and "In Time" starring Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried. Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum will oversee production for MGM.
