20th Century Fox takes over 'The Three Stooges' as Farrelly Bros. begin casting

Now that a U.S. Bankruptcy Court has approved MGM's financial-reorganization plan, Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation has taken over production on the Farrelly Brothers feature film "The Three Stooges". The Farrelly Brothers are based at 20th Century Fox.

At one point Jim Carrey, Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro were all cast to play the three lead roles in "The Three Stooges" movie. But after MGM's financial woes, those three pulled out of the project.

One of the film's producer/directors, Peter Farrelly, stated that ""The script is ready to go, and we are opening up these roles to the world right now, we'll make it with the best possible people. Our feeling is that no star is too big to audition and no matter who it is, we're going to have to see him in the role. This is not The Flintstones. You've got to be Moe Howard, Larry Fine and Curly Howard, and that could be a major movie star or an unknown."

Auditions for the film will begin in January, 2011 and shooting is scheduled for a March 14, 2011 start date in Atlanta, GA.

Story:

A modern day comedy following the misadventures of Moe, Larry, and Curly. The screenplay breaks the feature into four 20-minute shorts, in an approximation of the vaudeville and slapstick pioneers' most common format in the 1920s and '30s. The first episode establishes the bruising, boisterous brothers as 7-year-old castoffs who terrorize the nun-run orphanage that takes them in. Eventually forced to leave, Moe (the hostile leader), Larry (the jokey sidekick) and Curly (the childlike dimwit) try to find a place for themselves in a modern world.
